Let's Get Nasty
That’s right. I am coining a new nail trend - meet the “nasty nail.”
Last week, I was in dire need of a manicure and immediately called Meraki Nail Salon for help. When I finally made it there after two fire drills on my day off of work, I was greeted by Stephanie. Not only did I get a fabulous manicure, I also had a great hour-long conversation. We talked about wanting to go on vacation, the pandemic, and fun locations to visit in the future. We also talked about the vaccines and how ridiculous it is that, all of a sudden, blood clots have become a topic of critical importance although so many women have suffered from them due to birth control. And in some cases, several years after stopping use.
For me, the events around the unintended side effects and temporary pause on the J and J vaccine was a stark reminder of the sexism that still exists in our society. Why does women’s health continue to be marginalized or a topic of taboo conversation? Why do women still deal with lack of adequate care when it comes to hormonal health, reproductive health, sexual health, and even child birth? Are blood clots now an issue because the drug is taken by men, too? I had to wonder, if I didn’t have a vagina, would I receive better healthcare? I was pissed.
Stephanie asked me what color I wanted to paint my nails and the answer was clear. I asked her to paint my middle finger nail a separate color on purpose. Yes, I am sending a message. Hasn’t the past year and a half been enough?! Billie Eilish, Lizzo, Angelina, Madonna, and Lady Gaga are on to something. In addition to their words, they use fashion to speak their mind; whether its clothing, hair color, or other cosmetic signals. I’m into it. Let them stare and let your appearance do some of the talking. After all, it isn’t like I am going into the office these days.
For centuries, fashion has been used as a way to make a statement, send a message, revolt, or unite people. I am happy to continue the tradition, as opposed to taking out my feelings in other ways, and still keep it classy. If you are looking for a little release these days, try the nasty nail. You may be surprised at how satisfying it may feel.
